Julian Bream (born 15 July 1933) is a classical guitarist and lutenist. He is one of the most distinguished virtuosi of the 20th century, renowned for his interpretations of Baroque and Renaissance music as well as poetry and song. He has also explored music from around the world and has introduced many of the great classical composers to the world of guitar.
Bream began playing guitar at the age of four, and by age twelve was already performing in public. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London from 1946 to 1950, and then continued his studies with Andrés Segovia in Spain from 1951 to 1952. He made his professional debut in London in 1953 and soon became one of the most sought-after classical guitarists in the world.
Bream has released over twenty albums over the course of his career, including the landmark 1960 recording of the complete lute suites of Johann Sebastian Bach and lute songs of John Dowland. He has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Sir John Barbirolli, Yehudi Menuhin, Jacqueline du Pré, Sir Georg Solti, and Julian Lloyd Webber. He has also written two books, Julian Bream: A Life on the Road and Julian Bream: An Autobiography.
Bream has received numerous awards and honors, including a knighthood from the British government in 1977. He has been named a Fellow of the Royal College of Music, an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Northern College of Music. He has also been awarded the Order of Merit, the highest honor given to a British citizen.
Bream has inspired generations of classical guitarists and lutenists, and his influence can be heard in the playing of John Williams, Paco de Lucia, and many others. He continues to perform, compose, and teach, passing on his knowledge and passion for music to a new generation.
